October 15-21, 2017 is National Hospital and Health System Pharmacy Week, which acknowledges contemporary pharmacy services as an essential component of safe and effective medication use. Hospital and health system pharmacists and technicians have been given the opportunity to take on enhanced patient care roles because of a number of factors, including the deployment of highly trained clinical pharmacists and new technologies.
In 2016, more than 2.5 million medication orders and almost 7 million doses were dispensed to Kaleida Health patients. Our pharmacists make hundreds of interventions each day, including dose adjustments, order clarification, therapeutic exchanges, drug information and patient counseling. In addition, pharmacists are involved in patient care clinical rounds, antibiotic stewardship, anticoagulation management, transitions of care, medication counseling, and mentoring pharmacy residents and students. Our certified pharmacy technicians work side-by-side with the pharmacists, allowing the technologic advances to maximize their contribution to the medication use process. As this technology continues to evolve, pharmacists will have greater opportunities to be involved in direct patient care.
Kaleida Health would like to thank the pharmacists, technicians and pharmacy staff across the organization for their hard work and dedication to providing excellent service to patients and the community.
