The CDC has issued a recommendation that healthcare workers use eye protection (goggles or face shield) during the care and treatment of patients with coronavirus. The global scale of the crisis has created supply chain shortages related to protective equipment. In an effort to supply our healthcare workers with this protection, Kaleida Health is evaluating and considering multiple alternative products. Many of these products are manufactured by non-medical companies (Bauer, Ford, etc.) using innovative methods (eg. 3D-printing) to rapidly meet the global need.
Consequently, many of these products do not have formal recommendations from the manufacturer for cleaning and disinfection. In an effort to quickly and safely distribute these products to our healthcare workers, we are adopting the following recommendations from the CDC.
Selected Options for Reprocessing Eye Protection Taken from the CDC Website:
Adhere to recommended manufacturer instructions for cleaning and disinfection. When manufacturer instructions for cleaning and disinfection are unavailable, such as for single use disposable face shields, consider:
These shields can be useful in high-risk areas when used in conjunction with an N95 mask. There is consensus that using a face shield may prevent contamination of the N95 and extend the useful life of the mask.
We will continue to evaluate and source new products as they become available. This may result in variations in manufacturer and physical appearance. We will distribute new product information when available to supplement the CDC recommendations.
