Over the last few weeks, we have all heard how important COVID-19 testing is. Our Kaleida Health Laboratories team has worked tirelessly to expand our testing capabilities and ensure accurate and efficient testing. Our simple appointment process for Kaleida Health employees can be found on KaleidaScope upon clicking the green "Employee Testing" button within the Coronavirus Updates box. From there, employees will be taken through a series of screening questions, if deemed eligible for testing they will be directed to an online scheduling tool to pick an appointment slot.
As of Friday, April 17, Kaleida Health Laboratories has also expanded testing for all essential workers to add to the list of high priority testing groups, which already includes other community hospital system employees and first responders.
While it is important to celebrate these new developments at Kaleida Health Laboratories, it’s also important to acknowledge our employees actually administering the tests. Clinicians from the Visiting Nursing Association of WNY administer tests at our testing sites. We thank them all for stepping up in a big way to serve our employees and our community.
We talked with Lori, RN who volunteered to work at our testing sites. She has been administering tests at the sites since mid-March. Lori said, "Kaleida Health has really been great in terms of making sure we all feel safe and have the appropriate equipment we need."
The actual test consists of either a nasal or oral swab and only takes a couple of minutes. People can drive up to any of our testing locations and an employee like Lori will administer the test. The specimen will then be safely secured, adhering to the appropriate guidelines to help ensure accurate testing. It is then couriered to our Kaleida Health Laboratories headquarters at Flint Road for testing. Turnaround time for results is around 48-72 hours.
"I try to remember that each of these people in their cars are scared and nervous. They’re not sure what their results are going to be and how that will impact them and their loved ones. It’s serious and I take my job very seriously. I want to do whatever I can to ensure an easy testing process and administer the test accurately to help ensure accurate results." Lori adds.
We want to thank each and every one of our employees for their efforts in the fight against COVID-19. Thank you for all that you do, together we will remain #KaleidaStrong.
